A Perfect Day Out Near Bishops Castle, Shropshire

Some days just fall into place. This is one of our favourite ways to spend a day from the huts.

Hot tub at sunrise, a walk along one of Shropshire's most dramatic ridges, lunch by a log fire and an afternoon wandering one of England's most characterful small towns. Here's the full day.

Morning — Sunrise in the Hot Tub

From the huts · No driving required

Start the day the right way. The sunrise from the huts is something else — pour a coffee, get in the hot tub and watch the light come up over the Shropshire Hills. There's no better start to a winter's day, and no rush to be anywhere.

Mid-morning — Stiperstones Walk

25 minutes from the huts · Moderate walk

Head out to the Stiperstones for a walk along the ridge. In autumn and winter it's dramatic and wild — frost on the quartzite rocks, big skies and views that stretch for miles. The Devil's Chair at the top is atmospheric in any weather, but on a crisp morning it's unforgettable.

Lunch — The Bridges, Ratlinghope

20 minutes from the huts · Book ahead at weekends

Come down off the hill and head to The Bridges at Ratlinghope. One of our favourite pubs in Shropshire at any time of year, but in winter it's perfect. Log fires, locally sourced seasonal food and the kind of welcome that makes you stay longer than planned.

Afternoon — Bishops Castle

20 minutes from the huts

A short drive into town for a wander. Browse Rosie's Vintage Shop, pick up something at the Poetry Pharmacy, and finish the afternoon at The Castle Hotel — often with a fire going, it's the perfect spot for a cosy beer before heading back.

NB: guests of Shropshire Shepherd's Huts receive 10% off food at The Castle Hotel.

Optional — Stokesay Castle

20 minutes from The Bridges · English Heritage

If you want to add something historical after lunch, Stokesay Castle is a 20-minute drive from The Bridges. One of the best-preserved medieval manor houses in England, it's beautiful in winter light and free for English Heritage members.

Evening — Back to the Hut

Home for the evening. Light the fire, pour something good and think about doing it all again tomorrow.

Oak Hut and Olive Hut are the perfect base for a day like this. Everything above is within half an hour of the door.
