Some of the best days in South Shropshire start with no particular plan. This one has ancient history, big views and a quiet pub at the end.
Mitchell's Fold and Corndon Hill sit just across the border into Powys, a short drive from our shepherd's huts near Bishops Castle. Together they make a brilliant half-day out — the kind that stays with you.
Mitchell's Fold Stone Circle
Near Priest Weston · Free to visit · English Heritage
Mitchell's Fold is a Bronze Age stone circle sitting high on open Shropshire moorland, dating back around 3,500 years. It is one of the most atmospheric prehistoric sites in the region — remote, windswept and genuinely impressive. The stones have stood here since around 1500BC and on a quiet morning, with no one else around, it is hard not to feel the weight of that.
The views from up here stretch into Wales on a clear day. Free to visit and well worth arriving early before anyone else does.
Corndon Hill
513 metres · Moderate · Powys border
Rising to 513 metres just over the border in Powys, Corndon Hill is a straightforward but rewarding walk with panoramic views over the Shropshire Hills, the Long Mynd and deep into mid-Wales. The summit feels genuinely wild and the walk up is accessible without being too demanding. Good for dogs too — wide open space and very few people.
Mitchell's Fold sits on the lower slopes, so you can combine both in a single morning without any great effort.
The Miners Arms
Near Priest Weston · Dog-friendly
A short drive from the stone circle, The Miners Arms is a traditional local pub and a good spot for a quiet drink after the walk. The kind of place that hasn't tried too hard to be anything other than what it is — which in Shropshire is usually a very good sign.
Oak Hut and Olive Hut are the perfect base for days like this. Mitchell's Fold is a 20-minute drive from the door.
