Shropshire Shepherd's Huts in autumn

Autumn in the Shropshire Hills

There's a strong case that South Shropshire is at its best in autumn. The hills turn amber and gold, the light goes low in the afternoons, and the whole place takes on a quietness that's hard to find anywhere else in England.

The Landscape

The Shropshire Hills AONB in October and November is genuinely stunning. The Long Mynd, the Stiperstones, the valleys around Bishops Castle — everything looks different in autumn light. It's the best time of year to walk, with the ground firm underfoot, the views completely clear and very few other people around.

The Huts in Autumn

The wood-fired hot tub comes into its own in autumn. There's nothing quite like sitting in the hot tub as the mist sits in the valley below, or watching the sun go down over the hills on a clear October evening. The huts are warm and cosy — log burners, good bedding, everything you need to come in from the cold.

Quarry Lodge

West of the Long Mynd · Fri, Sat and Sun 10am–4pm

West of the Long Mynd, Quarry Lodge is one of those hidden gems that feels like a genuine discovery. A coffee and gift shop, a dahlia flower field, a pumpkin patch and a small vineyard — all in one charming spot in the Shropshire hills. The coffee is excellent and the cakes are homemade. Open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays 10am to 4pm, it's the perfect autumn detour. We can't recommend it enough — it's a very special and unique place.

Walking

A walk on the Stiperstones on a crisp autumn morning is hard to beat. The quartzite rocks, the big open skies, the views stretching into Wales — it all feels more dramatic in October than at any other time of year. Mitchell's Fold stone circle in the low autumn light is equally special. Both are within easy reach of the huts.

Lunch at The Bridges

Ratlinghope · 20 minutes from the huts · Book ahead at weekends

After a morning on the hills there's nowhere better than The Bridges at Ratlinghope. In autumn and winter it's exactly what you want — log fires, locally sourced seasonal food and a warm welcome.

Bishops Castle

A wander around Bishops Castle on an autumn afternoon is quietly lovely. The Poetry Pharmacy, Rosie's Vintage Shop, a beer at The Castle Hotel with a fire going. The town has a particular charm once the summer has passed.

There's something deeply grounding about South Shropshire in autumn. A walk, a good lunch, a fire in the evening and the hot tub under a clear October sky. Ideal for those looking for some rest and recuperation. It's hard to beat.
